Environmental protection and work safety are key factors in modern shipping. The increasing regulation of oil products, both in port and at sea, reflects a heightened awareness of the potential dangers confronting marine and coastal biospheres.

The "International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships", an element of the MARPOL Convention, was formulated by the IMO in annexes, each of which deals with a particular pollution issue. In concordance with those countries which approved and ratified Annexes I - VI, the Bominflot Group and its network of partner organizations strive to comply fully with these stipulations. In particular, Bominflot recognizes the ground-breaking agreement reached recently by the IMO in terms of sulphur limits in marine fuels. The company commits itself to minimizing the economic impact of these regulations on ship operators, while always caring for the health of our common global environment.

Steady as she goes
Annex I of the MARPOL Convention deals with "Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Oil". Bominflot offers a variety of services aimed towards alleviating slops disposal and waste treatment. Bominflot is determined to coordinate activities with both partners and customers to the fullest extent to avoid any further burdening of the marine environment. Staff seminars on "Accident Prevention" supplement these efforts.
Spillage
A drop in the bucket
One of the main concerns of Annex I of the MARPOL Convention is the prevention of accidental spills and prohibiting the disposal of oil, oily slops and ballast waters into the open sea. In compliance with these targets, Bominflot conducts controls at regular intervals of all hoses, pumps and tanks in use, as well as those utilized by chartered partner ships.

Where vigilance pays off
Bominflot complies fully with all local regulations regarding health and work safety. Wherever Bominflot employees or contractors are at work, they are fully informed of the risks involved when working with hazardous materials. Accidents are prevented by holding regularly scheduled seminars at which staff attendance is mandatory.
